Where to talk like a pirate all year round

Ahoy me hearties! Great news we bring… September welcomes that most hilarious of ‘awareness’ days: National Talk Like a Pirate Day. May your social media feeds be overrun with pirate-related memes and maybe even your go-to news channel will sneak in a mention.

For those of you who have enthusiastic pirate fans in your midst, pirate talk is probably a more frequent phenomenon than once a year. Arrrr! And so we bring you some inspiration that’ll satisfy those who want to talk like a pirate come breakfast, lunch, dinner and, obviously, bedtime.

6 places to talk like a pirate

Yorkshire

Shiver me timbers the Whitby Pirate Festival is all in aid of the RNLI – when did these smuggling types get into corporate social responsibility? All for a good cause an early September weekend on the Yorkshire coast is brimful with pirate fun, kids activities and pirate story time, and live music. Yo ho ho and a bottle of water for the driver of the Whitby open top bus tour so you can see Whitby like never before!

Isle of Wight

The annual Shipwreck Isle festival on the Isle of Wight in July is a treasure hunter’s trove. Pull on your best Jack Sparrow costume and catch up with the kids as they race to this free family festival in true swashbuckling style. Polish your sword skills, hunt for jewels at Blackbeard’s market or pick up fresh pirate tricks from the full timers.

South Wales

Batten down the hatches for the annual Brotherhood of the Black Pirate Festival, which takes place at Llancaiach Fawr in August. This is where serious enthusiasts gather to talk like a pirate. Imagine all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies swept into one without the Hollywood blockbuster backdrop and you’ll be en pointe. There are battles with real swords (and foam ones too for the kids), pirate cocktail tents, cannon explosions, and ferret racing (we’re not sure about that one either).

Devon

It doesn’t take much heave ho to see why Brixham Pirate Festival is so popular. One for your May calendar that makes the most of its seaside setting. Talk like a pirate as you take a tour of El Galeon and soak up live music aboard. Watch out for cannons to deafen and skirmishes to witness. Many a sea shanty shall be sung, plenty o’ rum will be poured. Join the fun with your best swagger and peace-tied cutlass.

Kent

For buccaneers in search of booty the Peninsula Pyrates Weekend at Landguard Fort in Felixstowe should restock your galleon. Who will win the best pirate contest and will there be a skirmish over the results? Barge your way through the barrel racing, keep your eyes peeled for smugglers and generally soak up the shenanigans including musket firings and drill displays. This one’s all about the kids with two jam-packed days of family fun along treasure trails in the spirit of the golden age of piracy.

Cornwall

Real pirates were once the scourge of Cornwall and now our favourite UK holiday destination makes the most of them in its tourist attractions. At Pirate’s Quest in Newquay you’ll be guided by a pirate on a tour of piracy history and scenery. Complete the treasure quests as you go and pull out your best swagger to enter the scare zone. Over on Cornwall’s south coast the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre in Charlestown will occupy all ages of maritime enthusiasts with thousands of artefacts recovered from hundreds of shipwrecks dating from the 1700s to World War II. More sea stories than pirate specific adventures, but fascinating all the same. Two perfect rainy day in Cornwall activities!
