After a fairly cool summer, it seems like the sun has finally come out to play this month!
September is here and it’s weeks before the clocks change. Summer days are yours for a while yet and there’s bound to be some annual leave yet to scatter liberally across long weekends.
Short breaks mean less packing and more focus on your destination, and what there is to cram in to a two or three night break.
September short break ideas
Follow the Tour of Britain
Move over France, cycling is hot to trot in the UK these days. So much so, not only do we have Tour de France champions topping the podium, but our country lanes are heaving with weaving cyclists come the weekend or summer evening. Enter stage left: OVO Energy Tour of Britain. Racing to take in as much of the British Isles as possible, you can follow the end of the tour for a few days with a short break in Edinburgh.
Heed the Gloucester History Festival
If there were a better excuse for a weekend in the Cotswolds, falling back on a history festival will impress even the meanest of bosses. The Gloucester History Festival consumes this Cotswold town for two whole weeks attracting the likes of Dan Snow and Natalie Haynes to talk historic tales and split the facts from the fibs.
Wander the Yorkshire Wold Walking & Outdoors Festival
Walking holidays in Yorkshire tick every rambling box. Up hill, down dale, over moorland and along the coast, you’re spoilt for choice of route and tier of challenge. This activity festival also incorporates horse riding and cycling should you have walking wounded in your entourage. Fit in a short break over the 10 day festival to see what scenes you could explore. Extend your stay in Yorkshire to experience an active autumn calendar on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Eat your way around a month of food & drink festivals
Pick your corner of the UK, or why not do a foodie tour one weekend after another. Start in East Anglia with the acclaimed Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival while soaking up some sea air and some fine local brew. Head to central England and the original food festival of Ludlow where the big name chefs rock up alongside the latest artisan producers. Head up north and experience harvest time in Yorkshire’s capital of food, Malton, or wander a little further across the region to the Holmfirth Food & Drink Festival. While you’re in the locality, the annual World Black Pudding Throwing Championship takes place in September between teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire. Duck!
Be dazzled at Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival
Put your visions of sporting pursuits and country attire in the Scottish Borders to one side, if only for one week of the year. Come September, Berwick upon Tweed comes alive with its Film & Media Arts Festival. Celebrating the newest films from independent directors, there will be red carpet and world premieres, just no Hollywood heroics. For those fascinated by filmmaking there are workshops galore too.
Rock stars at the ready for The Isle of Wight Festival
This festival is usually held in June but is later this year and so makes it into our Top 8! For all you Gen X’s out there, Liam Gallagher is headlining on Friday night, and for the baby boomers… Tom Jones! If camping with the crowds is just not for you, take a look at our Isle of Wight cottages for a luxurious alternative.
Savour a sip at The Oxford Wine Festival
Better be quick for this one, taking place this Saturday afternoon (11th September) at the world famous Oxford Union you can sample 100s of award-winning rare and unusual wines from over 25 countries. We’re sold. Hic! Browse our Oxford holiday cottages here.
Bottoms up, it’s the Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival, Nottingham
And so from the grape to the grain… This Festival actually takes place 13-16 October but we thought we’d better offer something to those that enjoy a pint rather than a pino. With a massive choice of cask beer and real ciders there’s also live entertainment, food stalls and a gin bar. Hurrah!
