Here, at the prominent explorer’s former home – close to where his legendary ship Endeavour was built – you’ll find an exhibition of mesmerising maps, letters and artefacts in which you can immerse. While you’re in the area, make time for a photo under the 20-foot whale jaw bone arch, a memorial to the 18th and 19th century whalers who set off from Whitby to the Arctic and survived the hunt.

Fancy something more sedate? Stroll along the promenade and take in the colourful fishing boats and beach huts that add such character to this charming spot.
