Holidays in Warwickshire

There’s only one place we can start when it comes to Warwickshire, and that’s with the brilliant Warwick Castle. One of the UK’s ten most popular attractions, the castle has a magnificence that draws visitors to the county town all year round. With medieval towers that you can see for miles and impressive interiors that’ll transport you to another era, the castle’s the perfect place to start your Warwickshire break.

There’s no county quite like Warwickshire, and it more than embraces its historic charm by hosting events that draw the crowds throughout the year. Warwick Folk Festival takes place every summer, and as it’s been running since the 1970s it’s one of the most established annual events in the country (and the most fun come to that). At Christmas, Warwick Victorian Evening sees the town wind back the clock and celebrate days gone by, and the event includes everything from a lantern procession that makes a beautiful sight, to traditional fairground rides, all centred around a classic Christmas market.

Speaking of shopping, Warwick’s a great place for buying those little items you never spot anywhere else. With independent shops that line historic streets, it’s just the place for finding something different, and there’s a busy market at Market Place on Saturdays as well as a monthly farmers’ market for anyone keen to sample the local produce. Yum.

Did we mention that Stratford upon Avon, birthplace of The Bard, sits within Warwickshire? A visit to New Place, Shakespeare’s family home for 19 years, and also where he died 400 years ago, is not to be missed if you’re a literary fan. This year, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has transformed this internationally significant heritage site into a window of the world of Shakespeare for the 21st century. Go and explore, you won’t regret it.

There’s another exciting way to enjoy your time in Warwick, and that’s with a visit to one of the oldest racecourses in the whole country. The course still hosts races all year round, and whether you’re an avid spectator or you’ve yet to experience the thrill of the races – it’s well worth going along. For an elegant day out away from the crowds, head to Charlecote Park. This National Trust house sits at the heart of its very own deer park, and it’s stunning.
