Dubbed the jewel of the South West, Somerset is the seventh largest county in the UK in terms of size. It by no means ranks highly in terms of population however (good news for you!) meaning that there’s an abundance of lush English countryside to explore, and a high chance of finding a secluded spot in which to relax.

A holiday in Somerset will provide you with the perfect opportunity to explore an unusual array of attractions – descend into cavernous depths, gasp at a gorge, take a bus around Bath or explore Exmoor.

In order to rest and recharge, first stop is Exmoor National Park. Within its 267 square miles is a peace and tranquillity difficult to match. Catch a glimpse of red deer, climb to the top of cliffs that plunge into the Bristol Channel or walk on the vast swathes of moorland – perhaps try the Coleridge Way or the South West Coast Path.

There will be ample opportunity to source the finest local foods – perfect to fill the fridge in your cottage – as you tour the area. Discover ancient villages (we like Porlock and Winsford) and sample the finest ciders and cheese. And from cheese to cheddar, take a trip to Cheddar Gorge and learn about prehistoric man as you descend into the stalactite caverns. The caves at Wookey Hole are another famous county attraction – don’t miss The Witch’s Kitchen and the spooky tale of it’s inhabitant!

We can’t mention Somerset without a nod to Glastonbury. The Glastonbury Festival is a big attraction, but for those visitors wanting to explore the town there is much to see and do, including Glastonbury Tor and Abbey. From towns to cities, visit Bath for its famous architecture and distinctive yellow stone – the crescent, circus and squares have helped it gain the status of UNESCO World Heritage site.
