Holidays in Devon

One of the most popular destinations in the UK, a holiday in Devon comes crammed full of possibilities – spend a day at the beach, or take the family out to one of the county’s many attractions, stop off at a farm shop on the way home and stock up on freshly baked scones, clotted cream, some of the finest jams, and a packet of Earl Grey before you head back to your holiday cottage for a cream tea fit for a king!

If a cottage in Kingsbridge is for you, you won’t be disappointed. Strike out for the day to one of the many blue flag beaches nearby – our favourite is Bigbury-on-Sea – which has a good reputation for quality of water and cleanliness of the beach. It’s a great choice for families with its sandy beach and shallow waters, and it also has a fair few rock-pools for those budding marine biologists! We can’t leave Bigbury without a mention of the famous landmark, Burgh Island. Overlooking the beach, it’s accessible at low tide, and at high tide you can catch a lift on the popular ‘sea tractor’.

Devon is filled with some really good family attractions. Find time to visit Pennywell Farm where a different farm animal is fed hourly, and small hands can get busy feeding hungry mouths – overseen by trained farm hands of course! Nearby Plymouth is also a draw, the National Aquarium will provide hours of fun and the more adventurous can book onto the ‘Sleeping with Sharks’ evening. For a spot of lunch, eat in at Rockfish. The best fish and chips in town and very child-friendly.

For lovers of peace and quiet, south Devon has a variety of beautiful gardens. Powderham Castle, Tiverton Castle and Pecorama all have wonderful gardens and grounds to explore. And don’t forget Dartmoor National Park, home to some of the most beautiful flaura and fauna in the country. Of course, you may not want to leave the comfort of your own holiday cottage garden. What could be better than a sunny spot, a comfy chair and a good book? If this is your idea of the perfect holiday, take a look at our Devon cottages today…
