There is almost no point in trying to write about Cumbria. We can’t compete with Wordsworth and photos best describe the rugged beauty.

However, we’re not going to let that put us off. For families, couples, groups of friends and lone rangers: holidays in the UK don’t get much better than a trip to “Lakeland”.

The towering fells and glittering lakes have been firing the national imagination for centuries. Step into Swallows and Amazons, view the vistas captured by Turner, or enter the world of Beatrix Potter. Hill Top, Beatrix’s 17th century farmhouse, is a “time capsule” of her life and the setting for many of her tales. Small children will also enjoy The World of Beatrix Potter, in Bowness-on-Windermere.

If you’re plotting a holiday to Cumbria, then we can safely assume that you’re seeking the great outdoors. Seasoned hikers can tackle England’s tallest mountain on their walking holiday, the great hulking form of Scafell Pike. Those with a head for heights can scramble along the notorious Striding Edge. This tightrope walk along a jagged ridge forms part of the ascent up Helvellyn.

For something less challenging, visit the Fairy Glen, in Borrowdale. These secluded natural pools and waterfalls are popular with walkers and wild swimmers alike.

Other ways to run off steam include: canoeing on Wastwater (England’s deepest lake), rock climbing (courses for beginners are run at Langdale), ghyll scrambling (in Keswick) and mountain biking.

Many of our cottages are within easy reach of Ullswater. Cross the lake by steamer, explore the ancient woodland, look out for red squirrels and see if you can find the hidden waterfall, Aira Force.
