Holidays in Wiltshire
Wiltshire is the perfect county for visiting attractions both new and old. Visitors from around the world head to Wiltshire to explore its two magnificent stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury. These World Heritage Sites are located in the heart of a countryside from which you can explore winding footpaths, hills and dales and of the course ‘the Henges’. For those seeking a more vibrant visit, the medieval city of Salisbury is a delight and is anchored of course by Salisbury Cathedral.
If the calling card of this county are the eight white horse chalk figures on display on the hillsides, then the jewel in its crown is certainly Stonehenge. A great way to enjoy this marvellous prehistoric monument is to take a guided tour, buses leave from Salisbury town centre. Not as famous, but certainly out performing Stonehenge in terms of size, is Avebury Stone Circle located in the Marlborough Downs. The Stone Circle has been set amidst a backdrop of farming since the Bronze Age so prepare to find sheep amongst the stones when visiting – a sturdy pair of walking boots is a must!
Not content with its historical claim to fame, Wiltshire has also found its way onto our small screens. Bath is only a short drive away from the locations of many of those dramas that we’ve enjoyed on a dark winter’s night…visit Lacock Abbey and Great Chalford Manor where BBC2’s critically acclaimed ‘Wolf Hall’ was filmed. Or for those whose hearts were set a flutter by Poldark, why not visit Corsham – a quiet unspoilt town where peacocks roam the streets freely.
For a family day trip unlike any other, be sure to buy tickets to Longleat Safari Park. Make no mistake this is a park with a difference! You’ll see all manner of wild animals as you sit safely in your car and slowly drive around this amazing park. It’s nothing if not interactive – at least that’s what the monkeys think as they clamber on car roof tops and lope along past your car door, looking for mischief!
