Holidays in Whitby

Whether you arrive by steam locomotive via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or you drive down to the beach, make sure you book a holiday in Whitby and take in all it has to offer.

The view as you arrive by rail, passing under the Larpool Viaduct and chugging beside the River Esk towards the harbour with the atmospheric Abbey towering above, is fantastic. And, as you get onto the streets of Whitby, your visit will only get better and better.

You’ve got quite a choice. For a literary history lesson, venture up to the Abbey ruins. These overlook the turbulent North Sea and inspired Dracula author Bram Stroker in the creation of his gothic classic. For the full experience, visit at the end of April when the seaside town plays homage to Mr Stoker with its Goth Weekend and bizarre bazaar alternative market.  Just beware of any conspicuously creepy looking black dogs on the shoreline…

To gen up on Yorkshire’s maritime heritage, why not visit Captain Cook’s Memorial Museum? Here, at the prominent explorer’s former home – close to where his legendary ship Endeavour was built – you’ll find an exhibition of mesmerising maps, letters and artefacts in which you can immerse. While you’re in the area, make time for a photo under the 20-foot whale jaw bone arch, a memorial to the 18th and 19th century whalers who set off from Whitby to the Arctic and survived the hunt.

Cover it all with a fascinating Whitby wander. Select a spine-tingling ghost walk to discover North Yorkshire’s weird and wonderful past (and present) or take an all-encompassing Heritage Town Tour that goes from the centre of the old town to St Mary’s challenging 199 steps.

Fancy something more sedate? Stroll along the promenade and take in the colourful fishing boats and beach huts that add such character to this charming spot. But make time for a paddle or a dip in the crisp waters of one of Whitby’s Blue Flag offerings – a family favourite. Who can resist filling up on Yorkshire’s finest fish and chips while here? We dare you!
