Now we may be a tiny bit biased, but Suffolk’s one of our favourite counties, and it’s the perfect destination if you’re after an escape from it all to somewhere beautiful. A visit to Suffolk will ensure picturesque countryside and no matter where you wander, you’ll never be far away from an ancient market town or a friendly village.

Speaking of ancient towns, Suffolk’s home to an intriguing group of towns known as The Wool Towns, and they’re so named because they formed a thriving wool and textiles industry during the Middle Ages. These days, they fascinate visitors with their history, and the most famous of them is Lavenham. The world may have changed around this former hub of activity, but its timber-framed buildings still stand, and with 340 listed buildings to its name a visit is about as close as you can get to walking around a real Medieval town.

With an award-winning market and something for everyone, Bury St Edmunds is one of the county’s best-loved towns. Highlights include The Nutshell – the smallest pub in the whole of Britain and Abbey Gardens, where you’ll find the remains of a Benedictine Abbey which dates back to the 11th century.
