A holiday in Snowdonia in North Wales does that rare thing of ticking off a number of wildly varying ‘must-haves’. Mountains. Beaches. Caves. Waterfalls. Tick. Throw in delicious food (try the regions Cavern cheddar), acres of room for pets (if needed) and all you have to do is bring along your nearest and dearest and you’ve got great company too.

Let’s take it from the top and start at the summit of what’s arguably the region’s biggest draw. Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and the most welcoming for novice climbers. There are six routes to choose from with distances varying from three to five miles. Of course walking to the top isn’t the only way to experience the majesty of the mountain. The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a far easier mode of transport so if your aim is to drink in the vivid scenery, this gets our vote. From climbing to castles, Harlech is our next stop. Renowned for the castle, the golden sands it overlooks and for ‘Men of Harlech’ the nation’s unofficial anthem loved by rugby fans and marching bands alike. The song is said to describe the siege which took place here during the War of the Roses, where a handful of men stood firm against an invading arms of thousands. Once you’ve had your fill of the history of the castle, wander down to the blue flag beach which is popular for families with a long stretch of sand as well as dunes. For those that like to plan ahead there’s ample parking at Harlech as well as toilets near to the beach and a shop for essentials.

If thoughts turn to how to keep teens and thrill-seekers happy Snowdonia has much to offer. From up high to down below head to Zip World at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Who cares about the rain, the caverns await! There are zip lines, rope bridges and tunnels to explore, all with supervision of course. Billed as the scariest assault course in the UK, Go Below dares you to climb up a waterfall, traverse an abyss and abseil down to the deepest point in the UK. If that all sounds too exhausting our advice is to head to the St Tudno Hotel in Llandudno for afternoon tea.
