Originally called Sunderland before North Sunderland, Seahouses is now named after the quaint cottage dwellings built for its local fishing community and offers a bustling fishing harbour with a treasure trove of traditional seaside shops and colourful boats.

The Seahouses Festival, an annual event since 1999, has grown from a celebration of sea shanties and maritime heritage to a merriment of wider culture and local coastal wildlife in recent years. Although, the town’s days of net and haul are memorialised by the Swallow Fish and the UK’s oldest smokehouse as well as The Fisherman’s Kitchen where you’ll find fishing memorabilia to intrigue alongside an enticing day’s catch.

The sandy beaches with their gentle slopes, grassy dunes and occasional crags are a hit with swimmers, walkers, twitchers and anglers alike. As well as having all the usual watersports offerings, tranquil and beautiful Seahouses is on the radar of horse riders and golfers. There’s also crazy golf with a view for those seeking more informal putting practice.  

The bridge to the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Seahouses is a popular destination for those visiting the Northumberland National Park and the famous Farne Islands.

A number of boats offer tours around, and trips to, the Farne Islands from Seahouses. This not only provides visitors with the lowdown on historic ship wrecks and the Grace Darling/local lifeboat story via onboard commentary but also offers opportunities to see some of the 150,000 seabirds – from puffins and guillemots to terns and eider ducks – that live on the islands, spot members of one of the UK’s biggest grey seal colonies or spy a porpoise as it breaks water.
