Holidays in Moray

With the third longest river in Scotland running through it, Moray extends from the magnificent mountains of the Cairngorms National Park – where you’ll find Britain’s only herd of reindeer – to the Moray Firth coastline known for its enchanting resident marine mammals.

At Moray’s shoreline you’ll be delighted by towns such as Lossiemouth with its beautiful beaches and dunes as well as charming fishing villages like Findochty. Spey Bay is where the Moray Firth Wildlife Centre (part of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) can be found. The Moray Firth, a large and fertile haven of the North Sea, is a brilliant place to see bottlenose dolphins with a pod of around 130 individuals living nearby. Rare wildfowl, ospreys, otters, harbour seals, harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, pilot whales and orcas have also been sighted.

Bordered by Aberdeenshire and located in the north-east of Scotland, Moray is a land of castle ruins, beautiful buildings of worship and ancient Pictish symbol stones. It’s positively brimming with heritage, myth and legend.

Fancy an historical foray at the ruins of Elgin Cathedral and the Spynie Palace (former home to the Bishops of Moray)? How about a nose around Burghead Promontory Fort and visitor centre where the mystery of Burghead Well is sure to peak your interest? Perhaps you’d prefer an afternoon exploring the castles of Duffus, Brodie, Drumin, Ballindalloch, Balvenie or Auchindoun. Don’t forget to check out the ancient mysticism of Sueno’s Stone, The Rodney Stone and the Inveravon Pictish Stones too.

The River Spey at Moray’s heart is long and fast-flowing, which has made it the life-blood of the local salmon fishing and distillery trades. If you’d like to find out about the making of malt whiskey and perhaps sample a wee nip, you can visit the Glen Moray Distillery and visitor centre at Elgin, the Dallas Dhu Distillery near Forres, Aberlour Distillery, Glenlivet Distillery or Cragganmore Distillery near Ballindalloch, Glenfarclas Distillery on the slopes of Ben Rinnes, Cardhu Distillery at Knockando, Glenfiddich Distillery, Balvenie Distillery or the picturesque Strathisla Distillery. Thirsty work!

We can help you find a Moray holiday cottage that ticks all your boxes so you can start sightseeing this Scottish haven for heritage, wildlife and whisky in style.
