Holidays in the Lake District

Put simply, the Lake District National Park is one of the biggest and most popular parks in the UK. Housing as it does over two hundred fells and sixteen lakes it’s also home to the largest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. So for those that seek a holiday brimful of natural wonder, this corner of north west England is undoubtedly for you.

Don’t know how to start planning your Lake District holiday? How about taking in ten lakes in one day? The Ten Lakes Spectacular is run by Mountain Goat Tours and in our opinion is a great way to start exploring. You’ll visit Windermere, Rydal Water, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Derwent Water, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Bassenthwaite, Ullswater and Brothers Water. Billed as the ‘most beautiful corner of England’ this trip will leave you in no doubt as to why. There are many stops en route with the most popular being the Grasmere visit, home of poet William Wordsworth.

Quite a clutch of famous wordsmiths have used the Lake District as a backdrop to their literary genius. And it’s not hard to see why.  The tranquil lapping of lakes against a backdrop of majestic mountains would surely coax an abundance of creativity from us all. It certainly worked wonders on Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome, he of Swallows and Amazons fame, who all spent time in the area.

With over two million people cycling at least once a week now, the Lake District is the perfect place to pedal. With a massive range of cycle paths road cyclists, mountain bikers and beginners will enjoy a delightful day out with breath-taking views guaranteed. For those seeking a more leisurely pace why not cycle around Windermere before taking the Cross Lakes Experience which includes Claife Viewing Station, a visit to Hawkshead as well as Beatrix Potter’s former home of Hill Top (tip: you can store your bike on the bus rack between Ferry House and Hawshead).

Our holiday cottages in the Lake District reflect the peaceful nature of the setting with many built using slate stone from local quarries. With the area’s natural beauty mirrored by the homes that have been built there over hundreds of years you’ll experience the full impact of beautiful Lakeland from the comfort of your own Lake District cottage.
