Kingsbridge is a pretty market town in south Devon and the perfect place to call home on your holiday due to its size and location. You’ll have your pick of places to eat and easy access to shops for the odd pint of milk and a paper, but it’s also great for exploring local beaches and other parts of south Devon on your days out.

Kingsbridge presides over the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary. An AONB, the estuary supports local wildlife and birds, many of which you’ll see from your riverside bench, should you stop a while. Speaking of wildlife one of the town’s favourite (and free!) activities at high tide is crabbing (wildlife/crustaceans, not too much of a leap right?). Grab yourself a pack of bacon, a crabbing line and a bucket then race your neighbour to see who can catch the most crabs in half an hour (remembering to pop them back home at the end of the count up of course 😉 ).

Being based on the water Kingsbridge is awash with coastal activities and water sports. Fancy a cruise? Take the seasonal Rivermaid Ferry up the estuary to Salcombe and explore one of the beautiful beaches there. There are many beaches just a short drive away from Kingsbridge, amongst our favourites are Slapton Sands, Hope Cove and Bantham. A notable mention is Bigbury on Sea beach, overlooked by picturesque Burgh Island. An expansive beach lapped by shallow waters, it’s great for families. Lifeguards are present from May-September, there’s a first aid room and also a beach café which sells organic, local food. That’s mum satisfied on the safety and sustenance fronts then.

Back to Kingsbridge for a whistle-stop tour of other activities and eateries. Head to the Art Café and get creative juices flowing and taste buds watering. Nibble a huge slice of homemade sponge whilst you paint a piece of pottery to take home. Rainy day? Kings Cinema has three screens showing new releases, classics and indie films – you’re bound to agree on something! And to end our journey where we began we’ll finish up back at the estuary. For arguably the best stone-baked pizzas in town the Crabshell Inn is not to be missed. With an enviable quayside view there’s no better place to enjoy your Burgh Island Ice Tea.
