Holidays in Hampshire
If you’re looking for a holiday with a bit of something for everyone, then the New Forest in the county of Hampshire will tick that box.
Take a walk, or ride, along one of the multitude of cycle tracks and paths throughout the New Forest, at the most southerly tip. Along the way you’ll come across some of the 3,000 locals that call it their home…those inhabitants are the New Forest ponies that have roamed the area freely for thousands of years. There are plenty of picnic sites and ancient pubs, making it the perfect place to while away the day.
A stop off at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth, and drinking in the splendour of HMS Victory, one of the Royal Navy’s most famous warships, is not to be missed before heading inland again. You’ll be in easy reach of Beaulieu Motor Museum if you’re a petrol head, boasting one of the finest collections of cars and motorcycles in the world. And if you plan your visit right, you can also enjoy one of the many events held there specifically for lovers of Land Rovers or Fords.
For the younger members of the group, choose from a trip to Marwell Zoo, or Paulton’s Park. Both guarantee a great day out. Marwell Zoo is home to giraffes, penguins and cheetahs amongst many other animals. What it’s not home to are pigs… but you can find Peppa Pig and all of her friends at Paulton’s Park, of course.
For lovers of literature, travel up the county and pay a visit to the cathedral city of Winchester, home to the last resting place of Jane Austen. Buried in the cathedral in 1871, a permanent exhibition is available to view beside the grave detailing the author’s life. On the topic of books, don’t miss the stunning 12th century Winchester Bible, also housed at the cathedral.
From New Forest walks to cultural day trips, a Hampshire cottage will put you at the heart of this delightful county.
