Holidays in Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan may only be a short distance from bustling Cardiff, but in some ways it feels a world away from the crowds of the city. Home to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the most southerly point in the whole country, Glamorgan’s the perfect destination for those of you who like to spend your holidays out and about, and surrounded by landscape that’s so dramatic it’s almost alive. Better still, as it’s only a few miles from Cardiff, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

So, what to pop on your ‘to do’ list for during your Glamorgan holiday? Well, those of you who are fans of Gavin and Stacey will be pleased to learn that one of the popular seaside resorts on the Glamorgan coastline is Barry Island, the very town where the romance of the century started when the Essex boy met the Welsh girl. Barry Island’s home to the Barry Island Pleasure Park that featured in the series (as well as a huge sandy beach of course), and it’s a great day out for all ages.

What’s a break in Wales without a visit to at least one romantic ruin? Well, Coity Castle’s said to have been built during the 12th century by one of the Knights of Glamorgan, and it sits high on a hill overlooking Bridgend.

Now, we mentioned the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast, and this 14 mile stretch of the Welsh coastline includes some of the country’s most gripping (and beautiful for that matter) sites. Dunraven Bay is one of the best-loved sandy beaches on this stretch of coastline, and thanks to its history it’s a popular place to spend a few hours hunting for fossils before you start off on a walk to take in the surrounding scenery.
