The quintessential English market town centres around the remains of Battle Abbey built by William the Conqueror himself, and it’s hard to believe that this very area saw one of the most significant battles in our county’s history unfold so many years ago. The abbey’s owned by the English Heritage, and it brings the tale of the battle to life for all ages with regular events, a museum and its visitor centre.
