A Quintessential Victorian north Norfolk seaside resort famed for its delicious crabs and crabbing tradition, Cromer is a great British beach holiday destination – come rain or shine.

Cromer town, with the imposing tower of its church (the tallest in Norfolk at 160ft) is a pastiche of lanes brimming with independent eateries offering the celebrated local crab on the menu. There are also plenty of boutique shops and galleries to tickle your fancy on wet-weather days as well as a medley of museums. The interactive Lifeboat Museum pays homage to the RNLI’s most decorated lifeboatman who saved 873 lives on the tempestuous coast and Cromer Museum, complete with a Victorian fisherman’s cottage, charts the town’s successful seafood history.    

One of the best times of year to visit is the summer. In May the Cromer & Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival takes over with a deliciously fishy theme and – you guessed it – crabbing competitions. Then, each August, the Cromer Carnival that dates back to the 13th century celebrates local life with flair. There are also various arts and cultural events spread throughout the year.

When the weather’s good there’s nothing like taking a stroll along Cromer’s cliff-tops or making a day of it on the Norfolk Coastal Path. Why not meander the promenade, taking in the seaside shelter featuring artwork by BBC Countryfile presenters Julia Bradbury and Matt Baker, or mosey down Cromer Pier where you’ll find the Lifeboat Station and Pavillion Theatre with its lively variety show programme? You’re guaranteed views of some of the finest sandy blue flag beaches in the area and plenty of action on the water, from surfers and paddle boarders to fishing boats and keen crabbers. Dare to pop on your scuba gear and you can dive into prehistoric natural history via the ancient Cromer Shoals Chalk Bed.

You can travel by the Coasthopper bus to explore the local area which offers a wealth of sight-seeing options. Close by, you’ll find Amazona Zoo with over 200 tropical species and play areas that are sure to delight your little monkeys. For a more sophisticated and sedate crowd the National Trust run Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park – a stunning country estate with endless parklands and the obligatory tearoom – is well worth a visit.
