An irresistibly rugged rural mid-Wales county, the promised land of Ceredigion is located on the west coast with a 60-mile-long spectacular shoreline. Saturated in history, Ceredigion was inhabited by Neolithic Age settlers. It is the namesake of Prince Ceredig – the son of a 5th century warrior king – as well as an important ancient pilgrimage route to the cathedral city of St Davids in Pembrokeshire.

The Dylan Thomas Trail also runs through Ceredigion and is a treat for literature-lovers to explore on foot or by bicycle.

Ceredigion’s ample golden coastline boasts Blue Flag, Green Coast and Seaside Awards, making it a top tourist spot. Up by the hilltop forts is a great standing point to take in the varied landscape dotted with mills and mines. It’s also the ideal place to scan the sea for bottlenose dolphins who cohabit with grey seals and a plethora of seabirds. Venture to the Teifi marshes and you might spy otters and kingfishers. Fancy something more active? How about a round of golf, a morning pony trekking or an afternoon paddleboarding?

Aberystwyth, where you’ll find the National Library of Wales and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, is Cerdigion’s biggest town and culture hub but that’s not all this county has to offer.

New Quay was once home to poet Thomas and is still home to the annual Cardigan Bay Regatta while close by conservation area Cors Caron is a hot-bed for wonderful wildlife from adders and polecats to buzzards and red kites. For foodies, the annual Cardigan Bay Seafood Festival should definitely be on the menu.
