Holidays in Brecon
The pretty market town of Brecon lies in the Usk Valley, on the northern border of the Brecon Beacons. Visitors are of course drawn to the vast expanse of space the Beacons’ afford; walk climb or ride there are activity centres galore. But do stop a while in the town, there’s much to recommend.
Unsurprisingly at the heart of this community lies Brecon Cathedral (built in the 12th century for those interested in history), and not only a place to worship but also home to a vast array of events. When holidaying in Brecon, why not pop along to one of the free lunchtime concerts which take place on Fridays throughout the summer months. Long been known as ‘the land of song’ singing plays a big part in Welsh national identity, and hymn singing remains popular today. For those interested in jazz as well as choral music, time your visit right and go to the Brecon Jazz Festival which takes place annually in August.
The Monmouthshire & Brecon canal, or the Mon & Brec as locals call it, is hailed as one of the most beautiful of the south Wales network and it’s worth seeing for yourself. The canal stretches 35 miles between the Brecon basin and the Pontymoile basin, wending past popular villages like Crickhowell en route. Climb aboard a narrowboat at Brecon basin, as a novel way of exploring the Beacons. The magnificent views of the central region, and the River Usk, will be worth mooring up for.
Continuing on our watery way, to the east of Brecon lies Llangorse Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales. A haven for wildlife, the site is protected so you can take to the water to enjoy the experience to the full, but only a certain amount of people are allowed on the water at any one time. Nearby Llangorse Multi Activity Centre has the answer if wet weather activities are required. Here you can learn how to horse ride or have a go at some indoor rock climbing.
Heading back into Brecon, for foodies we recommend the Brecknock Farmer’s Market, held on the second Saturday of the month from 10am – 2pm. Local suppliers of home grown food and drink are on hand to chat about their wares and to reassure you on miles (or not) from production to plate. Did you know that there are three sheep to every person in Wales? Nope thought not. Well that’s a lot of fresh milk, cheese and meat for you right there.
