Holidays in the Brecon Beacons
If your idea of the perfect holiday involves lacing up your walking boots, heading outside and gulping in lungfuls of crisp country air, OS map in your backpack and hip flask in your pocket, then the Brecon Beacons is for you.
The big, open landscapes and rolling skies will give the feeling of being a small speck in a much greater picture. It’s easy to lose yourself in such impressive surroundings – but make sure it’s not of the ‘I’m actually lost’ variety! There are plenty of walks available for amateur ramblers as well as those more risky adventures for the hardened climber. You could always explore the park using The Beacon’s Way – it takes 8 days to complete but we recommend doing it in your own time and enjoying all that the walk has to offer along the way.
As well as looking all around you and drinking in the sights, come nightfall don’t forget to look up. In 2012 the Brecon Beacons National Park became only the fifth destination in the world to become an International Dark Sky Reserve. The dark skies observed in the park are some of the highest quality in the whole of the UK, making it a perfect destination for any budding meteorologists and stargazers in the family. From the park you’re able to see the Milky Way and the major star constellations.
Of course, strolling and stargazing aren’t all that the park is about. There are multitudes of outdoor activities on offer for those that like more of an adrenalin rush. Try your hand at caving, potholing, mountain biking, abseiling, white water rafting and much more.
All that fresh air is bound to make you hungry. And what better place to eat locally sourced food than the park. There really are no food miles from plate to palate! From gourmet restaurants to pubs serving the finest fresh lamb and roast potatoes, it’s foodie heaven. Be sure to stop off for a much needed roast, a rest, and some relaxation before heading back to your Brecon holiday cottage to recharge.
