A magnificent market town found on the banks of the River Wye at the core of the Peak District National Park, Bakewell is a sweet treat for tourists in more ways than one.

Home to the “jam tart that went wrong”, Bakewell offers a medley of bakeries, cafes and tearooms in a picturesque setting where its infamous pudding can be relished. Although, the original recipe is kept under lock and key at the Original Bakewell Pudding Shop – a must visit for dessert devotees.

Foodies will also want to check out the monthly farmers’ market, coined one of the best in Britain and offering myriad local seasonal delicacies while the annual Bakewell Show (which is taking a break in 2018) offers something for everyone, from animal displays to country crafts .

With traditional stone cottages and gently winding waters flanked by willow and wandering wildfowl, as well as boasting one of the UK’s most ancient and attractive arched gothic stone bridges, Bakewell is a favourite of families, hikers and artists alike.

The Old House Museum, the oldest building in town, allows a step into the past of the charming “Capital of the Derbyshire Dales”, which was favoured by Roman settlers and inspired Jane Austen in her writing of Pride and Prejudice.  The Parish Church of All Saints, with its ominous spire and extraordinary architecture, is steeped in its own history dating back to Saxon times.

A wander around the Bakewell Bath Gardens, where one can appreciate perfect planting and a little slice of paradise where the town’s bathhouse once restored weary travellers, is another option. More intrepid adventurers might favour exploring the vivid vistas and one-to-one wildlife experiences offered by the Peak District on the Monsal Trail, which was once a major railway line.  There’s also a swimming pool and golf course for those who like to keep active.

Just outside town, you’ll find Haddon Hall – a favourite film set for producers of quality historical fiction – and Chatsworth House, a stunning stately home in its own right and venue of the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show which is a hit with floral fanatics.
