Holidays in Aldeburgh

Fresh fish may be on the menu when you visit this idyllic coastal Suffolk town but there’s nothing fishy about Aldeburgh and this pretty hideaway always offers a fresh experience! In fact, famed for its connection to a British composer and home to two of the finest fish and chip shops in the UK, Aldeburgh has a lot to offer.

Whether you want to wander the seafront, paddle in the Blue Flag waters and find the fisherman’s huts that tout their daily catch before exploring Aldeburgh’s 19th century Martello Tower sea defences or explore the boutiques and bookshops in town after a trip to the arthouse cinema, this jewel of the Suffolk coast is well worth a visit.

Once home to composer Benjamin Britten, Aldeburgh now hosts the Aldeburgh Festival. Located at Snape Maltings, offering Victorian industrial architecture in spectacular surroundings of An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the annual event salutes art and culture with a rich programme of events throughout June.

Though there are events happening at Britten’s favourite haunt year-round, with international visitors coming to enjoy everything from top-notch music concerts to celebrations of local food created by the cream of celebrity chefs at the Suffolk Food and Drink Festival in September. Snape Maltings even has its own café, pub and restaurant so you’re bound to be spoilt for choice on the refreshments front.

To totally top up on Britten, you could also visit The Red House where he lived and worked with his partner and fellow creative Peter Pairs. Check out the studio where he wrote and the library where he composed before enjoying the tranquil gardens.  Back on the shoreline, stroll North and take a photo-op at the stunning steel Scallop sculpture, inscribed with Britten’s haunting words from Grimes: “I hear those voices that will not be drowned”.

Whether Britten-mania calls to you or a good old fashioned British break-by-the-sea is more your thing, Love Cottages has plenty of high quality Aldeburgh holiday cottage accommodation on offer.
