The picturesque village of Shanklin is a wonderful location for your next short break on the Isle of Wight.
Wander along the sandy beach and then explore Shanklin Chine (pronounced ‘chyn’). The chine is a wooded coastal ravine full of lush vegetation and waterfalls. There is a footpath leading up through the woodland to Shanklin Old Town at the top. Visit the Heritage Centre before you leave to learn about the history of this very special tourist attraction. Spend an hour wandering the walkways or walk briskly through in just a few minutes if the beach below is your destination.
The Old Town has many tea shops and pubs a’plenty. You could take in an open-air concert at the Bandstand in Rylestone Gardens and then re-fuel with a traditional cream tea. Leaving the village follow the coastal road south and then head west along the Military Road to explore other parts of the Island. Stop at the iconic Needles in Freshwater and learn how space rockets were tested at the Battery back in the 1960s. Yarmouth is a lovely town with its own pier, independent shops and ferries that sail across to Lymington.
Spend half a day at Tapnell Farm, near Newport, on your way back through to Shanklin. Get up close and personal with the farm animals, there’s a water park, a climbing wall, indoor play centre and zip wires too. The burgers and nibbly bits at the award winning The Cow Restaurant are not to be missed, so don’t waste time with a packed lunch!
You’ll need to put your feet up back at your cottage after a fun-packed day.
