Sandown

Our Sandown holiday cottages on the south east coast of the Isle Wight promise a nostalgic seaside holiday with all the mod cons.

Sandown enjoys a sheltered coastal location and Sandown Bay is a beautiful spot for family days at the beach. The impressive pier is at the heart of this traditional British seaside resort as miles of sandy beaches stretch out from either side.

Sandown beach has been recognised for its bucket and spade credentials by BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards and for being home to rich swathes of wildlife and fossil laden cliffs. On the topic of prehistoric finds, the Isle of Wight has a rich dinosaur heritage and fossil hunting is a brilliant local activity with the kids topped off with a visit to Dinosaur Isle.

A wander along the esplanade will steer to Yaverland beach in one direction and Shanklin in the other. Yaverland is renowned for its watersports and famous ‘black’ sand and Shanklin is home to the rather beautiful Shanklin Chine. Chine is a word local only to the Island and Dorset meaning a deep, narrow ravine with water running down to the sea.

Once you’ve explored the eastern side of the Isle head over to the west for an entirely different landscape. In Freshwater you can climb the majestic cliffs at Tennyson Down, named after English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson who once lived nearby. Next head around the coastal road to Yarmouth and visit celeb haunt Salty’s Restaurant Bar (booking essential!). You could also get the ferry over to Lymington for a day out shopping.

Choose one of our Sandown holiday rentals and enjoy a family holiday exploring the Isle of Wight.
