Helston

At the north west edge of the Lizard Peninsula, pretty Helston resides a little inland from Porthleven. Once a harbour market town, the estuary silted up but the town’s history as an important port and later as a tin mining administrative centre ensures a grandeur to its architecture. Fine Cornish granite and slate splash a place romantically riddled with narrow streets and cute alleyways that are calling you to explore.

There’s no shortage of fascinating Cornish traditions but Helston has one of the best. Dating back thousands of years, the Helston Flora or Furry Dance takes place annually in May. To secure a seat in the house, you’ll need to book holiday cottages in Helston early – this is not an event to be missed. While your here, take in a town trail starting at the Guildhall and a visit to the Folk Museum. Walkers will delight in routes around Penrose Estate and Goonhilly satellite station.

Take a while surveying the scenery from one of our Helston holiday cottages.
