Follow the valley through Cornwall’s renowned granite cliffs to seaside Porthtowan. You’re entering Cornish mining heritage country. Perhaps not the prettiest of Cornish villages, there’s no fishing village history here. Instead, Wheal Towan and Roath engine house brought industry to the area. The latter reminding today’s visitors of the area’s heritage from its stark position on the cliffs above the beach.
Down on the beach, slide down the dunes to find windbreaker after windbreaker as families hoard around sandcastles and digging competitions. Into the ocean saunter the surfers in search of some of Cornwall’s best white horses. At low tide this vast sandy sprawl reaches one way to St Agnes Head and the other to Chapel Porth.
Many a Cornwall family holiday memory has been created here. Day trips often take in the expansive woodland at Tehidy Country Park or Kennell Vale, if not a mining museum or experience.
Pack the tribe and start your Cornwall break in one of our Porthtowan holiday cottages.
