Founded by local Lord Trematon in the 12th century, today Saltash is a busy town that has grown up around bustling estuary life and is a great base from which to explore the Tamar Valley. This beautiful river valley promises flashes of history, smatterings of coastal cottages and plentiful seaside villages to explore. Let the fascination begin up river at National Trust’s Tudor mansion Cotehele, where its once active quay now draws you for a Cornish cream tea. Exhaust a day, and yourselves at 16th century Mount Edgcumbe, which enjoys 7km of coastal grounds for you explore on the segways provided. In search of sand, surf and wild swimming, the 3-mile beach at Whitsand Bay should be your first port of call.
