For those wanting a completely ‘off grid’ holiday (looking at you The Drovers Cabin 👀) to those that enjoy a sense of the unusual (put your back into hefting your barrow at Easdale Cottage 💪). We’ve also squeezed in a few that have combined their eco credentials with some serious luxury too.
We’ve rustled up seven our favourites below, kick-starting your 2022 holiday cottage research in plenty of time…
1 Watergate Lodge, Cornwall
Accommodation: Sleeps 12, 5 bedrooms
Stand-out feature: Watergate Lodge is just 400 metres from the beach and comes with a wildflower curved roof, air-source heating and a mechanical ventilation system.
Must visit: The Eden Project to explore the rainforest biome. Trek through the humid tropics via SE Asia, West Africa and South America.
2 Flackstead, Isle of Wight
Accommodation: Sleeps 6, 3 bedrooms
Stand-out feature: Flackstead is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and also has a biomass boiler and solar panels #ecocredentials
Must visit: Monkey Haven, this Green Star Gold attraction won it’s eco tourism credentials by providing the following: all the timber that they use is from sustainable forests, their cedar roofs are energy efficient and help to prevent heat loss, the floor of the soft play area is made from 100% recycled aircraft tyres, fresh fruit and veg are grown at the Haven to feed the primates & much more!
3 Creek Cottage, Pembrokeshire
Accommodation: 6 guests, 3 bedrooms
Standout-feature: Creek Cottage is set within Upton Castle grounds and enjoys 35 acres of woodlands and gardens. It’s off-grid electricity supply comes from eco-friendly renewable sources and hot water is supplied by solar panels, supplemented by a wood-fire Rayburn.
Must visit: Upton Castle Gardens, listed historic gardens surround the 13th century castle. There is also a medieval chapel, featured on C4’s Time Team, which predates the castle and contains ancient effigies.
4 Dorset Eco Retreats, Dorset
Accommodation: sleeps 16, 8 bedrooms [note that the property combines 3 individual eco retreats that can also be booked separately: Bracken, Fern and Bramble]
Stand-out feature: each property has ground floor heating and a wood-fired hot tub.
Must visit: Studland Bay, four miles of beautiful beaches line the sheltered waters of Studland Bay – ideal for beach games, sandcastles, watersports – or simply relaxing.
5. Easdale Cottage, Oban
Accommodation: sleeps 4, 2 bedrooms
Stand-out features: there is no access to the Island by car, your car will be parked on the mainland for the duration of your stay! NB there is a 300 yard walk from the ferry to Easdale Cottage, and you get your very own luggage transporter… a wheelbarrow!
Must visit: well… you’re on an Island so walking and bird watching are key. Also from the rear garden of the cottage you get direct access to slate mined quarry pools which are breathtaking!
6. Wonderwall, West Cornwall
Accommodation: sleeps 7, 3 bedrooms
Stand-out features: a mere ten-minute, sand dune-strewn stroll from Gwithian’s stunning “three mile beach”; famed for its golden sand, legendary Atlantic surf and stunning sunsets.
Must visit: Sea Life Trust Cornish Seal Sanctuary, is a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline. When you visit you can see the seal pups at close quarters and learn about their individual stories!
7. The Drovers Cabin, Kirkcudbright
Accommodation: sleeps 4, 2 bedrooms
Stand-out features: this cottage is completely off-grid and would be perfect for those wanting to truly escape the modern day. As there is no electricity there is no WiFi or TV, lighting is supplied by battery torches or firelight, bottled LPG gas ensures that there is a plentiful supply of hot water for washing and bathing and to cook a hot meal after a hard day spent exploring!
Must visit: In the local village is Dundrenann Abbey. A ruined Cistercian abbey where Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland before being imprisoned in the Tower of London
